Sombrerete: Pueblo Mágico
Sombrerete is a municipality located in the state of Zacatecas and is known for its rich culture, mining, agriculture, commerce, and delicious brujitas. It is one of many pueblo mágicos (magic towns) in Mexico, which is a title that is given from the Tourist Board to acknowledge the kind of magic that is built upon local traditions and the preservation of historic landmarks. Sombrerete is near and dear to my heart, as it’s where my mom is from. I’d spend several summers here as a kid and after almost a decade, I finally returned. This 458 year old place has grown since I last visited, yet its charm still remains strong.
Sombrerete got its name from this mountain shape that is thought to resemble a Spanish tricorne style hat.
Parroquia de Santo Domingo and its barroque style facade.
Sierra de Organos is a national park that got its name from the rock formations which are thought to look like organ pipes.
